The roofing and construction industry is made up of skilled workers who usually start their journey as an apprentice. We are proud to announce that over the last few months we have been supporting Newcastle College by investing into their course and supplying them with roofing materials which can be utilised in practical, hands-on sessions.
Apprenticeships undoubtedly transform lives and are vital in giving young people the chance to build themselves a better future by aiding them to take the first step onto the employment ladder.
For those already in work then apprenticeships can provide them with the skills to progress further, by 2020 the UK Government is committed to the introduction of 3 million new apprenticeships, spending around £2.5bn in order to try and transform the country’s investment in skills and our people.
As an employer, the support of apprentices is vital. It allows for us to help to boost the skills of the workforce but also to increase economic productivity. Being a business at the forefront of the roofing and construction industry then for us to be able to help more apprentices to get involved in this particular industry is a no-brainer. It ensures that the industry is continuously growing and our commitment to this growth is unquestionable.
Easy-Trim are proud to announce that we have been working closely with Newcastle College in order to assist them by, providing them with roofing products that can be used within practical elements of the course within the roofing department.
We took some time out to speak to Alan Bessford, Programme Lead and Lecturer at Newcastle College Roofing Department. He has been personally involved within the roofing industry for over 30 years; he combined his experience with a further 10 years in education and training, joining Newcastle College in November 2017. His role is to ensure learning and training in roofing is of first class standard within the North East.
Currently Newcastle College delivers courses of level 2 & 3 in roof slating and tiling, as well as level 2 built up felt roofing. More information regarding their courses can been found on Newcastle college website, CITB, NFRC or north east roof training group.
Presently the college has 53 apprentices enrolled onto the Roof Slating & Tiling course, as well as a further 13 learners doing built up felt roofing for various companies throughout north east and Cumbria.
The relationship between the college and Easy-Trim began whilst Alan was working for a different training provider where he met one of our Area Sales Managers, Sean Sutcliffe. From this we were found to be an excellent support for the training industry and thus Alan decided to contact Jamie Govier to have a meeting and discuss future partnership with us here at the college.
We have now started to form and bond this relationship between us all, which is progressing very well with some exciting things planned for the future.
Alan said, “Our relationship has only been set up and running since November, however the products we have received from Easy-Trim has helped us to conduct first class training, resulting in one of our learners David Crank from Hodgson Sayers Roofing winning the regional heat for the SkillBuild 2018 competition. We hope will result in him taking part in the finals at the NEC Birmingham in November this year.”
We have provided Newcastle College with ongoing product support and technical support which ensures that learners on the course obtain up to date products to use which are industry recognised and compatible with numerous slate and tile products. Ongoing training sessions from Easy-Trim will keep all apprentices up to date with current legislation.
We asked Alan, what he thought the future would hold for the roofing and construction industry and he shared his thoughts stating, “The roofing industry looks very positive, with an increase in demand for more housing and house building requirements set to increase throughout the country. Due to an increased demand for housing, there is more of an increase for house builders to produce more affordable living. Therefore roofing is an industry of continuous growth, as well as the demand to re-roof existing properties. I, Alan Bessford and my senior lecturer Jay Lewis feel we are ambassadors of the future standards to produce quality roofers for the future here at Newcastle College by using quality products which are industry approved such as Easy-Trim products”.
