Staff Spotlight: 20 Q&A’s by the easy-trim Coffee Machine

Photo of Lauren Killcross Allow for us to introduce you to Lauren Killcross who is our Assistant Accountant here at easy-trim.

How would you describe your day job at Easy-Trim?

My day job at Easy-Trim entails supporting the Financial Controller throughout all aspects of the Finance department, sat behind two huge screens at the far end of the Junction 7 office.

I spend the first half of each day completing a pretty structured set of reports, sending these out company wise and ensuring all reconciliations are completed. The second half of each day however is quite varied, I can be working on anything from Payroll, reporting for Rob (National Sales Manager) or Neil (Commercial Director), Management Accounts supporting documents, KPI reporting, to something completely out of the blue – depends what day it is and who needs what.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Begrudgingly, my alarm clock! One of my least favourite things about myself, I really wish I was better at jumping straight out of bed in the morning.

Before Easy-Trim, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had and why?

I previously worked for Bowland Brewery, which was extremely interesting. I learnt all about brewing and gained a real passion. As it was such a small team I was involved with all aspects of the business, primarily Finance, but also Sales and Marketing – I’m pretty creative, so I really enjoyed the variety.

If you could switch job roles with anyone here, what would you be doing?

It wouldn’t actually be an existing role, however I think I’d really enjoy being a Technical Advocate, delivering CPD’s and encouraging Architects to specify our products.

What do you like the most about your job and what are your biggest challenges?

I like the fact that when working in Finance, you tend to learn about all aspects of the business – partly because I’m extremely inquisitive, but also because it’s important to have an understanding of how everything works in order to be able to account for things correctly. My biggest challenges… tough one! That can change daily, but trying not to swear is one of the regulars!

If you could change one thing right now about your job what would it be?

The location. I would be working in an office in a sunny city… with windows!

Tell us about your favourite memory to date at easy-trim?

Visiting Build Show 2017, it was a really great experience.

When you’re not working at Easy-Trim what do you get up to?

Spending time with friends and family, enjoying good food and wine… and gin! I love adventuring whenever possible, and also enjoy going to the gym. I hate the thought of it before I get there, but feeling great afterwards is a huge boost.

What is your biggest achievement in life to date?

This isn’t one individual achievement, however until the beginning of 2017 I did Show Jumping to quite a high level, and I have countless amazing memories and successes over the years which I look back on very fondly. Also during 2017 I completed Manchester 10k, which may be pretty insignificant to most people, but running is something I’ve never enjoyed or been particularly good at. I was extremely proud of pushing myself hard enough to succeed at something that I didn’t ever think I’d be able to.

What is the most important thing you have learned in the last 5 years?

To allow yourself happiness in your current situation. It is important to have goals and ambition, but not at the expense of enjoying your life as you live it.

Always be kind, as anyone could be going through something you will never know or understand.

Do not strive for material things, they do not give you happiness. Enjoying the small things in life and travelling is much more rewarding and fulfilling.

If you could pick anyone, dead or alive to be your life mentor who would it be and why?

Oprah Winfrey, because she is an INCREDIBLE woman!

What is your guilty pleasure?
Salt and pepper chicken wings, lemon meringue pie and Richmond Menthol.

If you could learn to do anything what would it be?

I would love to learn Italian fluently. Also I’d like to learn to ski.

What is your life motto or personal mantra?

I have a couple… “Everything happens for a reason.” When things have not gone to plan, to remind myself not to be disheartened. “If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing properly.” And “If you believe you can, you’re halfway there.”

Tell us the one thing you hate the most?

Laziness! Not that I am never guilty of being lazy, but I have absolutely no time for people who are not willing to get out there and make the effort to achieve what they wish for.

Tell us the one thing you cannot live without?

My car I think. Not for the material attachment to it, but for the freedom to jump in and go anywhere I want, whenever I want.

What is your hidden talent or party trick?
I’m not sure I have one! Do handstands count?

If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life what would it be?

Tricolore salad!

What three traits best describe you?

Generous, Passionate, Organised

If you came back as an animal what would you be and why?

A penguin I think. They’re adorable! I prefer colder climates (I get a bit fainty when I’m too hot), they are very generous, loyal and who wouldn’t want to be able to slide along on their own stomach in the snow?!

And the coffee is up! Thank you to Lauren for taking some time out their day at easy-trim to let us have the scoop inside their job at easy-trim.
